“How do I know my hoarding is working?” It is the question we hear most often. Digital ads come with clicks and dashboards. Outdoor has always been harder to measure, but that is changing, and there are simple steps any brand can take today.
Why measurement is the big OOH conversation right now
Industry leaders agree that measurement is what will unlock bigger outdoor budgets. As Shriranga Sudhakara of Vyoma Media told exchange4media, digital wins budgets partly because it can show results, and “OOH doesn’t have that common currency” yet. Industry bodies are responding: the Indian Outdoor Advertising Association has launched RoadStar, a unified audience measurement system, as a step toward common standards.
Until those standards are widely used, here is how you can measure your own campaign.
1. Start with a clear goal
Decide what success means before the hoarding goes up:
- Awareness: more people know your brand or launch
- Footfall: more visitors to your store, showroom or site office
- Leads: more calls, WhatsApp messages or form fills
- Sales: higher sales in the area around your sites
2. Use a unique phone number or WhatsApp link
Put a dedicated number or WhatsApp link on your hoarding that appears nowhere else. Every call or message to it came from your outdoor campaign.
3. Add a QR code, especially near slow traffic
QR codes work best where people stop or move slowly: traffic signals, bus shelters, metro stations and mall entrances. Link them to a campaign page with UTM tracking so you can see scans and conversions in Google Analytics. On fast expressway hoardings, skip the QR code and use a short, memorable website or phone number instead.
4. Use a campaign-only offer code
An offer such as “Mention NOIDA10 for 10% off” shows exactly how many customers came from the hoarding.
5. Compare before and after
Note your enquiries, store visits or website traffic from the area for four weeks before the campaign, then compare them with the campaign period. Keep other marketing steady so the difference is clear.
6. Watch branded search and social mentions
Outdoor ads often lead people to search your brand later. Check Google Search Console and Google Trends for branded searches from the cities where your hoardings run.
7. Ask for proof of display
Measurement starts with knowing your ad actually ran. Ask your agency for dated, location-tagged photos of every site after installation, and checks during the campaign.
The bottom line
Outdoor advertising is not unmeasurable. It simply needs a plan before the campaign starts. With a unique number, a QR code in the right place and a simple before-and-after comparison, you can see what your hoardings are delivering.
